Md 51 Safety Improvements
Allegany County, MD
KPA provided civil engineering for improvements to a high accident area on Md. 51 in the vicinity of Colliers Run. Here, a combination of horizontal curves in the road, an adverse cross slope and limited sight distances led the Maryland State Highway Administration to seek safety improvements.
KPA devised a plan that included grading improvements (superelevating the road’s cross-section) and safety devises such as concrete barriers, signage and rumble strips. Design work was complicated by the presence of rock outcroppings on one side of the road and the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on the other side.
Our work included from Field Evaluation, Concept plans, cross-slope studies, profiles, cost estimates for three concepts for rehabilitation of the roadway on a sharp curve. Final design, contract plans, specifications & estimate, rumble strips, jersey barriers and drainage modifications. Assignment on an On-Call Contract
