National Zoo Bridges

Kennedy, Porter & Associates, Inc. performed Scour Evaluations for three bridges located in the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The project task was to provide a recommended SI&A Item 113 Scour Critical Rating in accordance with Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) updated ratings as defined in Chapter 7 – Scour Program for Existing Bridges of the SHA Office of Structures “Manual on Hydrologic and Hydraulics Design”. In addition to a recommended scour critical rating, KPA also provided recommendations for scour-related repairs and scour countermeasures for these three bridges. The assessment of the scour potential at the bridge site was based on a field review of the structure and office review of available information (e.g., previous Bridge Inspection Reports, Construction Drawings, Soil Boring Logs, etc.) by an interdisciplinary team of professional engineers with technical knowledge and abilities in structural, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineering. The interdisciplinary team concurred with the recommended rating and scour repair/countermeasures and a Final Scour Evaluation Report was drafted and submitted to the bridge owner.
