Structural Inspection and Evaluation at
Prince George’s County Public Schools
Completed 2006

KPA inspected and provided a preliminary structural evaluation of the roof structures for 170 public school buildings.  The purpose of the inspections were to determine the presence and general condition of a certain type of open-web steel joist susceptible to corrosion.

In areas of restricted access (plaster and metal clad ceilings), KPA used a state-of-the-art BoreScope to view suspect roof framing with minimal disturbance (a 5/16” diameter hole in lieu of a 24”x24” field-cut access panel).

Our inspection involved coordination with 170 different school principals and maintenance staff, as well as the central administration.  Our work had to accommodate the scheduling need of each individual school.

This project ended with our presentation of a report outlining our findings, from which an extensive repair and rehabilitation program is currently being developed.

KPA’s innovative inspection techniques allowed this project to finish ahead of schedule and well within the budget.
